A route into the Walled City

Delhi Gate is one of the named entrances to Lahore’s Walled City. Pakistan’s Department of Archaeology and Museums records it as one of the city’s historic gates. A historic gate name can refer both to a route and to a particular structure; these do not necessarily have the same age. Lahore’s urban fabric has been rebuilt and adapted across several periods. When using old photographs or maps, note their date and viewpoint before assuming that every visible feature survives in the same form. The area remains a place of everyday movement and commerce.[1]

The route towards Wazir Khan Mosque

The Walled City Authority places Wazir Khan Mosque within the bazaar entered from Delhi Gate. The route connects a busy commercial street with an important seventeenth-century mosque and other buildings, making it useful for understanding the relationship between worship, trade and urban space. A visitor’s route is not a complete history of the people who lived or worked there. Shopkeepers, residents and visitors may know the neighbourhood through different experiences. Architectural records and local testimony can be read together, while respecting the fact that the bazaar is a working part of the city.[2]

The Shahi Hammam

Near the Delhi Gate route, the Shahi Hammam is a historic Mughal bathhouse. UNESCO recognised its conservation in the 2016 Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, and a later UNESCO mission report described the restoration project. A conservation award records a particular project and moment; it does not mean that maintenance is finished permanently. The bathhouse, gate and mosque should each be studied on their own terms, with their own construction and restoration histories. Together they show how public buildings and streets shaped the Walled City. Dated photographs and project records can help readers trace the building’s condition before and after the work.[3]
