Town and tehsil

Dunyapur is a town and tehsil in Lodhran district, southern Punjab, Pakistan. A 2012 municipal profile places the town north of the Sutlej and records Dunyapur’s earlier status as a union committee in 1924. A change of municipal jurisdiction is not the same as the creation of a settlement. Earlier records may place the same town in a different administrative unit, so researchers should follow the boundaries used in each document and check alternate spellings when searching catalogues.[1]

The census table records 51,888 residents in Dunyapur Municipal Committee in 2023 and 41,554 in 2017. These figures concern the municipality, not the tehsil; boundary changes have not been checked.[3]

Municipal development

The district government says Dunyapur and Kahror Pacca were transferred from Mailsi to Lodhran tehsil in 1924. The transfer illustrates why older documents may locate the same places under different jurisdictions. It also provides a starting point for examining gazetteers and settlement records, which can identify the villages included in each area. These administrative categories changed over time and should not be taken to describe every resident’s own sense of place.[2]

Looking beyond the centre

A 2026 local news report describes a district official’s inspection of sewerage work and other development projects in Dunyapur. The report also records a visit to a cattle market and discussion of educational facilities. It describes a specific inspection, not the completion of every scheme or a comprehensive assessment of services. Comparing contemporary reporting with municipal budgets, maps and local residents’ accounts would show how infrastructure has changed since earlier planning documents were published. The distinction between the town and surrounding tehsil remains useful when locating projects or interpreting who they are intended to serve. The newspaper also reports that the visit included an inspection of education facilities.[4]
