A town and district
Lodhran is a town and district in southern Punjab, Pakistan. A 2012 municipal profile places the district on the left bank of the Sutlej and lists Lodhran, Dunyapur and Kahror Pakka as its three tehsils. It dates the district’s creation to 1991 and describes Lodhran’s earlier town-committee and municipal status. A district includes rural areas and other towns as well as its headquarters, so its population is not interchangeable with the city’s. Administrative status and boundaries also change: historical records should be read with the date and geography of each entry in mind.[1]
The 2023 census records 144,512 people in Lodhran Municipal Committee, compared with 117,762 in its 2017 column. These counts concern the municipality, not the whole district; continuity of municipal boundaries between the two counts has not been established.[3]
Railways and administration
The district government dates the railway station to 1885 and mentions a line towards Karachi in 1909. Its account combines several kinds of history and contains inconsistent chronology, so the dates merit comparison with railway records.[2]
A municipal snapshot
Majeed Gill reported in Dawn on 26 December 2025 a proposal to preserve and renovate Lodhran railway station, describing it as a colonial-era junction. Officials briefing the district administration recalled that it served parts of Punjab and the former Bahawalpur State before Partition. The report records an announced plan and an official account of the station’s past; it does not establish that the renovation was completed. Railway timetables, maps, building surveys and passengers’ memories would add detail about the station’s changing use. They would also help distinguish the history of the building itself from that of the wider network passing through it. The report says the inspection considered facilities for travellers and the condition of the station building; these are observations made at that particular point in time. It describes the junction as part of the Lahore–Karachi railway route.[4]
