Place and population
Fort Abbas is a town and tehsil in Bahawalnagar district, southern Punjab, Pakistan. The district profile lists it alongside the district’s other tehsils, including Haroonabad and Chishtian. Administrative names matter when reading local history: a town or municipal area is smaller than the surrounding tehsil, and a figure for one should not be treated as the population of the other. Fort Abbas also provides an entry point to the history of Cholistan and the former Bahawalpur State, but the desert contains many distinct places and communities.[1]
Fort Abbas Municipal Committee: 83,192 people in 2023; 61,528 in 2017.[2]
The 1951 table records 2,499 in Fort Abbas Municipality; changes in the municipal boundaries over that longer period have not been established here.[3]
Phulra and the town’s name
A Punjab Food Authority district document describes the earlier town name as Phoolra and says Nawab Sir Sadiq renamed it Fort Abbas in 1927 after his son Muhammad Abbas. It locates the fort east of the present city. This is an official district narrative, rather than a contemporary decree; the spelling of Phulra or Phoolra varies across sources. Readers seeking the history of the name can compare this account with administrative records from the Bahawalpur State period and with the archaeology department’s listing of the fort.[4]
The surviving fort
Pakistan’s Department of Archaeology and Museums describes Phulra Fort as a historic monument in Bahawalnagar district, now in an advanced state of ruin. Its entry describes a square plan with corner bastions and the remains of a palace at the north-eastern corner. It reports that Karam Khan Arbani repaired the structure, while giving a broad historic date range rather than an exact foundation date. The entry lists the property as privately owned and not protected. Such designations can change; they are a record of what the listing says, not permission to enter or an up-to-date conservation survey.[5]
