At the edge of the hills
Pathankot is a city in northern Punjab, India, at a meeting point of routes towards Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. A Punjab government district profile describes it as a transport hub at the foot of the hills. The city is the headquarters of Pathankot district, which was formed from Gurdaspur district in 2011. This change is important when using census tables or older maps: a record made before the split can describe a larger Gurdaspur district that included Pathankot. The city, its district and the historical states that once included the area are distinct geographical units.[1]
A history of changing rule
The district administration’s historical account connects Pathankot with the former Nurpur state and its hill rulers. It also presents traditions about the town’s origins, including an association with Guru Nanak. Such traditions and the administrative history of Nurpur answer different questions and should not be conflated. The district page draws in part on a Kangra district gazetteer, a source produced under British rule. Comparing its claims with other documents helps distinguish inherited local histories from independently dated evidence. Like many regional centres, Pathankot’s past is connected with the hills as well as with the Punjab plains.[2]
The railway to Kangra
Pathankot is the starting point of the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway to Joginder Nagar. India’s submission to UNESCO’s tentative list says construction began in 1925, freight service opened in 1928 for the Uhl hydroelectric project, and passenger service followed in 1929. The line later faced interruptions and a partial realignment. A tentative-list entry is a proposal for possible World Heritage nomination, not inscription on the World Heritage List. Its account connects the railway to the region’s engineering and transport history; current train services should be checked separately with the railway operator.[3]
