A shrine in Lahore

Gurdwara Dera Sahib, also spelled Dehra Sahib, is a Sikh shrine in Lahore near the Lahore Fort and Badshahi Mosque. The Walled City of Lahore Authority identifies the gurdwara as a shrine associated with Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru. Its setting places it among monuments associated with several periods and communities in the city. The shrine is not simply an architectural object: it is also a place of worship and remembrance. A historical description of the surrounding city should be dated because river courses, streets and buildings have changed over time.[1]

Guru Arjan and the shrine

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee describes Dera Sahib as a place associated with Guru Arjan’s martyrdom and says that Maharaja Ranjit Singh had a gurdwara built there. Its account forms part of Sikh institutional remembrance. Researchers can compare such religious histories with contemporary documents, later scholarship and evidence about the buildings, while recognising that each source was created for a different purpose. The precise relationship between a historical event and a present structure may require careful interpretation; the history of a shrine includes later acts of commemoration as well as the event remembered there.[2]

Commemoration and pilgrimage

The Panjab University study describes Jor da Mela as a gathering associated with remembrance of Guru Arjan and discusses how accounts of the fair differed over time. Such records can help trace changes in participation and the way a religious event was described, but a historic report does not establish the schedule or access arrangements for a future visit. For pilgrims, prayer and collective remembrance give the site meaning that a survey of buildings alone cannot convey. Visitors should check current arrangements with relevant authorities, while researchers can use institutional histories and local accounts to study the shrine’s continuing life.[3]
