A town described through its institutions

The 1885 Imperial Gazetteer describes Hafizabad separately from the much larger tehsil that bore its name. The town was an administrative headquarters with courts, public offices, a police station and a vernacular middle school. It also had a sarai, or travellers’ inn, with a rest-house attached. This combination locates its nineteenth-century importance in administration, travel and schooling, rather than in an undifferentiated account of the surrounding countryside.[1]

The entry also refers to an earlier administrative role recorded in the Ain-i-Akbari. Its brief description is a colonial reference account, with a limited view of the town’s social life. Even so, the specific institutions provide useful starting points for further local research: where people lodged, where disputes were heard and where children received formal instruction. The district and town should remain separate when comparing such a description with later urban growth.[1]

Rice trading and the textile economy

The municipal committee’s industrial overview lists rice shellers and husking alongside flour mills, agricultural-implement workshops, power looms, sizing plants, handlooms and carpet-making units. The list records different forms of production and support work. In particular, looms and sizing facilities indicate that textile activity requires preparation and processing as well as the final weaving operation. The page supplies named sectors, rather than a complete count of factories or workers.[2]

The district’s agriculture overview identifies rice cultivation, including Basmati 385 and 386, and names Hafizabad and Jalalpur Bhattian grain markets. Cultivation takes place across a wider rural area; the city market is one place where that produce enters commerce. This distinction connects Hafizabad’s urban trading role to its agricultural hinterland without assigning every field, mill or neighbouring market to the city itself.[3]

Higher education within reach of the city

Government College University Faisalabad dates the inauguration of its Hafizabad sub-campus to 9 December 2019. The institutional account identifies premises in Mohallah Bahawalpura on Kassoki Road. It presents the campus as a response to students having to travel to other districts for higher education. A named location and dated foundation add a more recent educational institution to the older school recorded in the nineteenth-century gazetteer.[4]

The campus account describes initial degree teaching in English literature, mathematics, accounting and finance, and business administration, alongside bridging provision in English, mathematics and commerce. These subjects represent several routes into higher study rather than a single vocational school. The stated aim of improving local access is the university’s own account; enrolment figures and long-term educational outcomes require separate evidence. Its establishment nevertheless documents a distinct chapter in the city’s provision for students.[4]
