A neighbourhood in Lahore

Hira Mandi, also spelled Heera Mandi, is a historic area associated with Lahore’s Walled City. Its story involves neighbourhoods, markets, performance and sex work, and it cannot be reduced to a single label. A scholarly study of Lahore’s literary representations places Heera Mandi within the Walled City and considers how accounts of the district reflect wider questions about the city and Punjab. The boundaries and meaning of a neighbourhood can change over time, so descriptions should be tied to their period and source.[1]

Performance and social status

Louise Brown’s ethnographic research examines status and cultural production among tawaif, or courtesans, in Lahore’s Heera Mandi. It considers changing clientele and the role of the mujra, a performance involving singing and dance. Her study concerns a particular setting and period, rather than a complete history of all women in the district. Accounts that celebrate artistic training should also leave room for differences in power, livelihood, coercion and individual experience. Neither a romantic image nor a stereotype tells the whole story.[2]

Changing accounts of the district

A historical article in The Indian Express discusses Hira Mandi through successive political and cultural changes, including changing attitudes to courtesans and performance. Its narrative is a secondary interpretation, and claims about the area’s earliest origins or its exact boundaries need corroboration in dated records. Colonial regulations, changing patronage and later urban development are distinct subjects. A careful history should ask whose work was recorded and whose own voice was excluded from official or elite descriptions.[3]

Heritage without erasing residents

A Hindustan Times history column describes the district’s association with performance and later changes to its commercial landscape. As with any retrospective, it reflects the author’s interpretation and the sources available to them. Heritage research can combine such accounts with performers’ testimony, photographs, municipal records and studies of present-day livelihoods. People who live or work in a place are more than symbols of its past; their privacy, choices and differing experiences deserve respect when a neighbourhood is represented to visitors.[4]
