A town within Khanewal district
Jahanian is a town and tehsil in Khanewal district, Punjab, Pakistan. The district government lists Jahanian alongside Khanewal, Kabirwala and Mian Channu as one of its four tehsils. Khanewal became a district in 1985, according to the district profile. A tehsil is a wider area than its municipal centre, so localities with separate histories may appear in records under the same administrative heading. When using census or agricultural data, the unit and date are as important as the place name.[1]
Jahanian Municipal Committee: 50,318 people in 2023; 43,646 in 2017.[2]
The 2023 census counted 384,822 people across Jahanian tehsil, a larger area than the town alone.[7]
Cotton and market history
Research on irrigation and social change in colonial Multan identifies Jahanian among towns connected to the development of the Bari Doab colony and the cotton economy. A separate historical study reports ginning factories in Jahanian and several other colony towns by 1917. Cotton ginning separates fibre from seed and forms one step between cultivation and sale. The existence of factories does not tell us that every resident worked in cotton, nor does it establish who benefited equally from the growth of trade. Local business and labour records would help answer those questions.[3][4]
Water and the wider tehsil
The Punjab Agriculture Department’s district directory lists an on-farm water-management office for Jahanian. This identifies an administrative service associated with agriculture rather than a complete description of local water provision. Historical research can explain how irrigation and markets became linked, while census records describe municipal populations at particular dates. Neither source alone captures the full experience of villages in the tehsil. Farmers’ accounts, canal records and municipal documents can help reveal changes in land use, labour and infrastructure over time. The department lists offices separately for several tehsils, reflecting the district’s administrative geography.[5]
The Punjab Agriculture Department separately lists Jahanian among tehsils in a Lower Bari Doab water-efficiency pilot.[6]
