Town and tehsil
Mian Channu is a town and tehsil in Khanewal district, southern Punjab, Pakistan. Khanewal’s district profile lists Mian Channu among its four tehsils and notes that the district was created in 1985. The profile also identifies Tulamba as a historic town in Mian Channu tehsil. Tulamba and Mian Channu are distinct places, so evidence about one should not be treated as evidence about the other without a specific link. A tehsil encompasses more than its municipal centre and includes surrounding settlements. The profile places the district on a main railway line and national highway.[1]
Mian Channu Municipal Committee: 140,112 people in 2023; 90,157 in 2017.[2]
The 2023 census counted 872,581 people across Mian Channu tehsil, a larger area than the town alone.[6]
Canals and commerce
A study of irrigation and economic change in colonial Multan discusses Mian Channu as a market town in the Sidhnai Canal Colony, alongside Khanewal. It describes the growth of commercial intermediaries and connections with trading firms in the wider area. Another study of canal-colony towns notes railway-linked markets and identifies ginning factories at Mian Channu and Jahanian by 1917. These are historical researchers’ accounts of colonial economic development; they should be read with attention to the unequal effects of land settlement and to people whose livelihoods preceded canal projects.[3][4]
Reading the present through records
The Punjab Agriculture Department lists an on-farm water-management office for Mian Channu in its Khanewal district directory. That administrative record points to a continuing institutional concern with irrigation, but it does not describe all the town’s water sources or current service conditions. The dated census, historical studies and district profile answer different questions: population in a municipal area, changes in a regional economy, and the organisation of a district. Local land records, oral histories and maps can add detail about the people and neighbourhoods behind those broader descriptions.[5]
