Town, municipality and district
Layyah’s district history describes a place whose administrative role repeatedly changed. After British occupation in 1849 it briefly served as a divisional headquarters, then became a tehsil headquarters within Dera Ismail Khan. The portal places its transfer to the new Mianwali district in 1901 and its later inclusion in Muzaffargarh district.[1]
The same account dates the municipality to 1875 and the creation of Layyah district to 1982, comprising Layyah, Karor Lal Esan and Choubara tehsils. These dates refer to separate institutions and territorial arrangements. They should not be collapsed into one founding date for the settlement, nor used to draw present boundaries from an undated historical webpage.[1]
A college that moved through the town
Government Graduate College Layyah traces its beginning to 1945 under Syed Saadat Ali Shah. Its own chronology describes teaching first in a Hindu-school building, later in premises now associated with the Commerce College, and finally at its current location in 1964. It records permanent status in 1951. The changes in premises make education part of the town’s physical history.[2]
The college dates FSc teaching to 1950, chemistry and physics degree classes to 1960, and botany and zoology to 1974. Postgraduate Urdu and Islamic Studies followed in 1986, with further subjects in 1989. Its account places four-year BS teaching under BZU affiliation in 2019. This institutional sequence records expansion over time, rather than confirming every programme’s present availability.[2]
From sub-campus to independent university
The Higher Education Commission identifies a separate transition: Bahauddin Zakariya University’s Layyah sub-campus began in 2009 and became the independent University of Layyah under a 2022 Act. It lists a public institution chartered by the Punjab government. This history belongs to the university, not automatically to the older graduate college.[3]
HEC gives the university’s contact location as Katchehry Road and embeds a named university map reference. That point represents one educational institution in Layyah. Alongside the college’s movements and the town’s changing administrative role, it helps locate a specific strand of urban development without claiming to mark the settlement’s original centre.[3]
