A railway and a planned township

Malout is a town in Sri Muktsar Sahib district in Punjab, India. A 2000 court decision records that the Edward Ganj Public Welfare Association was registered in 1920–21 to develop a township near the then Malout Mandi. According to the decision, it acquired land and developed buildings including schools, residential buildings and guest houses. Roads, drainage and electricity supply were later transferred to the municipal committee as municipal limits expanded. The case concerns the association’s affairs, rather than a complete urban history, but its account shows how private and municipal institutions both contributed to the town’s development.[1]

Cotton and industry

The 1981 Faridkot district census handbook lists cotton ginning and textile units at Malout among the district’s larger industries. The census description places the town within a wider agricultural and industrial economy, in which processing, transport, trading and labour linked cotton-growing areas to markets. A factory named in a historical source should not be assumed to operate today or under the same ownership. Industrial records, workers’ accounts and local business archives would help explain employment and working conditions, which cannot be reconstructed fully from a list of establishments in an administrative handbook.[2]

Malout in the district

The district administration identifies Malout as the headquarters of a subdivision and places it on the Bathinda–Abohar railway line. It also lists Malout as one of the district’s development blocks. A town, subdivision and block are different units, and a statistic for one should not be treated as a figure for another. The 1981 handbook’s reference to Faridkot district reflects an earlier administrative setting; present-day Malout is in Sri Muktsar Sahib district. Railway and road connections have long shaped links with neighbouring markets, although travellers should check current services and routes separately before making plans.[3]

The 2011 census counted 81,406 people in Malout municipal council. This is the municipality, not the whole tehsil or district.[4]
