A market under Nabha

Mandi Gobindgarh is a town in Fatehgarh Sahib district, Punjab, India. Its master plan traces the development of a market under the princely state of Nabha and attributes the laying of its foundation to Maharaja Hira Singh in 1902. The plan describes an enclosed market with shops and residential accommodation, and says its old gates were later demolished as roads expanded. This is a planning authority’s account of the town’s past, not a complete history of its residents. Market development connected traders and craftspeople with a wider region, while the town’s industries developed over subsequent decades.[1]

Steel and employment

A district economic overview last updated in 2018 identifies Mandi Gobindgarh with steel rolling mills and describes it as a major industrial town. Steelmaking and related activities have linked factory owners, workers, transporters and suppliers of raw materials. The district’s economic overview also lists agriculture and other kinds of manufacturing in the wider district; the town’s steel identity should not be treated as a complete account of everyone’s work. Industrial records and workers’ experiences can show how production and employment changed over time. The overview gives no current count of functioning mills, and its description should not be interpreted as one.[2]

Air quality and industrial change

A 2019 clean-air action plan for Mandi Gobindgarh discusses air pollution in the industrial town and identifies measures intended to improve air quality. Pollution can come from several sources, including industry, traffic and dust, and the balance varies by location and time. A plan is evidence of identified problems and proposed actions; it does not by itself prove that each measure was completed or establish today’s air quality. Monitoring data, implementation reports and local accounts are needed to assess outcomes. Environmental history belongs alongside the story of industrial growth because production, work and public health have been connected in the town.[3]
