The Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri
Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab, India, is closely associated with the memory of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh, and their grandmother Mata Gujri. The district administration describes Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib as a memorial to the Sahibzadas and identifies related shrines within the complex. It also describes the annual Shaheedi Jor Mel in December, when people gather to remember them. Dates and details of early eighteenth-century events can differ among accounts. Religious tradition, commemorative practice and historical sources each contribute to understanding why this place is significant.[1]
Gurdwara Jyoti Sarup
The district administration identifies Gurdwara Jyoti Sarup as the place associated with the cremation of Mata Gujri and the two younger Sahibzadas. It is a separate gurdwara from the main Fatehgarh Sahib complex, though the sites are linked through shared remembrance. Their significance lies in continuing worship and commemoration as well as in their historical associations. A visitor description provides an introduction to the site but cannot resolve every question about the events or the later development of the buildings. Historical research benefits from comparing Sikh narratives, documentary records and scholarship, with attention to the date and purpose of each.[2]
A district and its headquarters
Fatehgarh Sahib district was created on 13 April 1992, according to its administration, and takes its name from Sahibzada Fateh Singh. The district headquarters are near the gurdwara and the historic town of Sirhind. A district is a wider administrative area than an individual shrine or town, and its boundaries and population should be described accordingly. The district includes places associated with several religious and cultural traditions, as well as farming and industry. Its modern administrative history therefore sits alongside older histories of Sirhind and the memorial landscape rather than replacing them. Transport and access details can change over time.[3]
