A market in the Bathinda region

Maur, often called Maur Mandi, is a town in Bathinda district, Punjab, India. A 2018 Punjab and Haryana High Court judgment records a dispute over a shop plot in the New Grain Market. The judgment describes a trader dealing in gur, sugar and ghee in the existing grain market, and a 2008 notice inviting applications from existing shopkeepers. The court sent the matter back for a fresh decision without ruling on the authenticity of certain documents. This individual case illuminates market administration and the movement from an old to a new market; it cannot represent every trader or worker.[1]

A railway station

The 2011 Bathinda census handbook lists Maur among the district’s railway stations. Railway connections have linked agricultural markets with other towns, but a station listing does not establish which trains stop there now or how goods moved in every period. Timetables, railway records and trade data answer different questions. The handbook is also a district-wide document, so descriptions of the surrounding region should not be assumed to apply equally to every neighbourhood in Maur. For current travel, readers should consult the railway operator; for historical changes, the census can be compared with other dated sources.[2]

Town and tehsil

The Bathinda district administration lists Maur among its tehsils and development blocks. These administrative units can cover a wider area than the municipal town, and their boundaries should be checked before comparing population or agricultural figures. A town, block and tehsil with similar names do not automatically refer to the same people or land. The district’s directory provides an entry point to local administration, while municipal and village records can help explain how services and institutions are organised. The town’s market history forms one part of a wider regional story of farming, transport and settlement.[3]

The 2011 census counted 31,849 people in Maur municipal town.[4]
