A planned town beside Chandigarh

Mohali, officially Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar or SAS Nagar, is a city in Punjab, India, adjoining Chandigarh. The 2011 district census handbook says the modern town was conceived as an industrial town after Punjab’s 1966 reorganisation and that its original plan extended Chandigarh’s architectural pattern. It also records that Mohali village had previously been included in the Chandigarh periphery zone. Planning a new town did not mean the land had no earlier history: villages and their residents were already part of the area. Understanding urban growth requires attention to those histories alongside plans for roads, sectors and industry.[1]

City and district

The district administration dates the creation of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district to 14 April 2006. It describes the district as formed from areas previously in Rupnagar and Patiala districts, including Mohali, Kharar and Dera Bassi tehsils. The city, tehsil and district share related names but do not have the same boundaries. Statistics for one should not be presented as figures for another. Chandigarh, meanwhile, is a separately administered Union territory. Close physical connections across an administrative boundary are important to everyday life, but they do not make Mohali part of Chandigarh’s municipal jurisdiction.[2]

Reading a sector plan

A published zoning drawing for Sector 54 shows residential, commercial, open-space and community uses alongside roads and public facilities. The drawing is a planning record, not proof that every proposed facility was built exactly as shown or remains unchanged. Its notes state that the digitised copy is based on an original drawing and that the original prevails in case of discrepancy. Such plans help explain how sectors were intended to work, while local records and residents’ accounts can show how they developed in practice. Planning documents are most useful when their dates and later amendments are kept in view.[3]
