A town by the Sutlej
Rupnagar, historically also called Ropar or Rupar, is a town in Punjab, India, beside the Sutlej. The district administration records a local account associating its founding and name with a ruler called Rokeshar and his son Rup Sen. That account should be treated as a tradition, not as proof of an exact founding date. Nearby archaeological mounds preserve evidence of much earlier settlement, but the existence of ancient occupation does not establish an unbroken history for the present town. The distinction between a modern place and the material remains found near it is useful when reading local histories.[1]
The meeting of 1831
In 1831 Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the East India Company’s governor-general, William Bentinck, met at Rupar on the Sutlej. Nineteenth-century historian John Clark Marshman describes arrangements for the meeting and the ceremony surrounding the two rulers’ encounter. His narrative is written from a British imperial perspective, with judgments and language that reflect that position. It is evidence for how a British author presented the occasion, not a neutral account of all participants’ motives. Reading it alongside Punjabi records and later scholarship helps separate the reported ceremonies from competing interpretations of their diplomatic importance.[2]
The meeting in archival records
A British Library catalogue entry for a painting of Maharaja Sher Singh and his court discusses objects shown in a later procession. Its author suggests that a cannon might have been one of two gifts to Ranjit Singh at the Rupar meeting, while noting that the official list sent to London does not mention cannon. The proposed identification is uncertain; the painting is not a direct depiction of the 1831 encounter. The catalogue shows how researchers compare images with written records when considering diplomatic gifts. Rupnagar also has an archaeological museum and ancient settlement remains, giving the town a history much longer than this single meeting.[3]
