Patran in Patiala district

Patran is a town in Patiala district in Indian Punjab. In the 1981 census, the town appeared as a newly classified urban place, with the name also printed as Partran in one table and Patran elsewhere. The table gives a population of 7,998 for the unit it counted. A census classification is a record of the statistical status and boundary used at a particular date, not a statement that settlement began in that year. The same report notes an administrative change in October 1980, after the census urban frame had been fixed.[1]

Town, villages and planning

The 2011 Census of India lists Patran as a municipal town within Patiala district. Town, ward, village and subdistrict entries are different geographic units; figures for one should not be labelled as another. The Patiala Urban Planning and Development Authority also lists Patran among its local planning areas. A planning-area listing is not a claim that the planning boundary is identical to the municipal boundary, or that proposals have already been built. Together, census and planning records help locate the town within a wider area while showing why dates and definitions matter in local research.[2][3]

The 2011 census counted 27,963 people in 5,489 households in Patran Municipal Council. The figure describes the town as defined in that census, not the wider local planning area or a present-day estimate.[6]

The Ghaggar and flooding

The Ghaggar is an important watercourse in Patiala district, according to the district administration. In July 2023, the Times of India reported flooding affecting villages in the Patran and Shutrana areas after breaches along the river and described rescue and evacuation work. That reporting concerns particular locations in a particular flood, not every part of Patran or a permanent condition. River channels, embankments, rainfall and local drainage all need to be considered when studying flood history. The district’s geographical description and dated reporting provide starting points for further investigation of the landscape and its communities.[4][5]
