A town in Patiala State
Samana is a town in Patiala district, Punjab, India. A census report of the former Patiala State describes it as a historic town and notes its road connection with Patiala. The report reflects the categories and priorities of its time, including the way it identifies communities and records population. It is useful for locating the town within a particular administrative setting, but its judgments and descriptions should be examined critically. The town’s history is longer than that of the census, and the princely state, the present district and the municipal town were not interchangeable territorial units.[1]
Changing tehsil boundaries
The 2011 Patiala district census handbook records changes to Samana tehsil between the 2001 and 2011 censuses, including the transfer of villages and towns to a newly created Patran tehsil. It also records villages transferred into Samana from Patiala tehsil. The name Samana can therefore refer to different territorial units in different years. A change in a tehsil population may reflect a boundary change as well as births, deaths or migration. Comparing tables responsibly requires checking the notification, date and area used in each count. The handbook’s list of changes helps make those comparisons more precise.[2]
Town, wards and villages
The 2011 primary census abstract lists Samana as a sub-district and separately identifies the municipal town and its wards. Villages in the sub-district are listed separately. A population figure for the municipality should not be presented as a total for the wider tehsil, or the other way around. Census categories give a structured view of households and people at a particular moment, but they do not tell the whole story of work, local institutions or migration. Historical records, community accounts and maps can add detail about how the town and its surrounding settlements developed over time.[3]
The 2011 census counted 54,072 people in Samana municipal town.[3]
