The fort in Bathinda
Qila Mubarak is a historic fort in the centre of Bathinda, Punjab, India. It should be distinguished from the fort complex of the same name in Patiala. The Bathinda district administration identifies the fort as a landmark within the city. Its long history is represented by buildings and masonry that have undergone changes over time; the appearance of the site today does not mean every visible part dates from its earliest phase. Claims about the original date of construction vary and need archaeological as well as documentary evidence. The fort is part of an inhabited urban landscape, not an isolated ruin.[1]
Razia Sultan and the fort
The Bathinda municipal corporation’s historical account associates the fort with Razia Sultan, ruler of Delhi from 1236 to 1240, and says she was imprisoned there in 1240. It also records an association with Guru Gobind Singh’s visit to Bathinda in the early eighteenth century. These connections belong to very different historical periods and should not be collapsed into one building campaign. The municipal account combines historical narrative with traditions about the town’s early origins. Readers seeking a detailed chronology should compare it with specialist histories and archaeological evidence rather than treating all claims as equally established.[2]
A protected monument
The Archaeological Survey of India lists Bhatinda Fort among centrally protected monuments. The listing establishes its status in that published inventory; it does not explain every phase of construction or provide a current assessment of the condition of the fabric. Conservation of an old fort involves decisions about repair, surviving materials and how to present different periods of use. Research can combine the protected-monument inventory with historical descriptions, architectural surveys and records of conservation work. Anyone planning a visit should check current access and opening arrangements with the responsible authorities, since a monument listing is not a visitor timetable.[3]
