A fort and palace in Patiala

Qila Mubarak is a fort and palace complex in Patiala, Punjab, India. Patiala’s district administration describes its development from an early mud fort, or kachhi garhi, into a more substantial fort associated with Baba Ala Singh. Buildings within the complex belong to a longer history of the former Patiala state and its rulers. A palace complex is not a single building from one date: courts, residential rooms, gates and later repairs can represent different phases. Qila Mubarak in Patiala should also be distinguished from other forts with the same name, including the fort at Bathinda.[1]

Court and residential spaces

A Punjab planning document lists Qila Mubarak among Patiala’s protected monuments under state legislation. It also lists other historic sites separately, including the Sheesh Mahal and Moti Bagh Palace. The names of rooms and buildings can be confusing, so a description of one Patiala palace should not automatically be transferred to another. Protection in a planning document identifies a legal and administrative framework, while the physical condition of a structure depends on maintenance and conservation. Maps, measured drawings and historical records help explain how the fort’s different spaces related to court and city life.[2]

Restoration and public access

Art historian Atinderpal Singh discusses restoration at Qila Mubarak and the different uses proposed for its buildings. His account identifies the Qila Androon, Ranvaas and Durbar Hall as distinct parts of the complex and describes phases of work and public access. Conservation involves choices about materials, painted surfaces, interpretation and how buildings can be used. An account written at one time cannot guarantee that every room is currently open, so visitors should check present arrangements. The complex can be studied both as a historic courtly environment and as a place whose preservation continues to be debated and planned.[3]
