Electricity used to lift water
Renala Khurd’s engineering history joins falling canal water to irrigation elsewhere. In a 1956 geographical study, Kazi S. Ahmad described a powerhouse near Renala railway station using a fall on the Lower Bari Doab Canal. Five generating sets supplied electricity to a substation at Siran, about seven or eight miles away, where pumps lifted water into distributaries serving neighbouring agricultural land.[1]
Ahmad traced the scheme to a private enterprise organised by engineer Ganga Ram under a government lease and recorded a government takeover in 1945. The beneficiaries he named included Mitchell’s Fruit Farm. This is a dated account of the connection between power generation and agriculture, rather than a claim that the station supplied every household. Its 1950 s generating figures should also remain separate from later plant ratings.[1]
Fruit farms and a food factory
Mitchell’s own company history dates Indian Mildura Fruit Farms to 1933, under Francis Mitchell, with citrus squashes among its early products. It records the adoption of the Mitchell’s Fruit Farms name in 1948 and a change to the Syed Maratib Ali family’s management in 1958. These are corporate milestones; they do not establish the founding date of Renala Khurd itself.[2]
The company’s location directory still identifies its factory, regional sales office and farms at Renala Khurd in Okara district, while placing the corporate office in Lahore. The distinction shows how a local production site can belong to a business administered through several cities. The directory establishes the company’s stated locations at inspection, without supporting claims that its orchards represent all local farming or that factory premises are open to visitors.[3]
A campus beyond the city name
The name University of Okara can obscure the geography of its campus. The Higher Education Commission’s university record gives its address at the Renala Khurd bypass on Multan Road and lists it as a recognised public institution chartered by Punjab, established in 2016. The atlas point follows the institution-specific map in that record, rather than marking the centre of Okara city.[4]
The university’s own contact page independently gives the same Renala Khurd bypass address. Keeping this location explicit allows the campus to be understood within Renala’s educational landscape while retaining its formal name. Canal engineering, food processing and higher education occupy different institutional settings; their records provide a chronology of local activity without making the town and the whole of Okara district interchangeable.[5]
