URA and vowels

A vowel bearer represents a vowel where no consonant comes before it in the written syllable.[4]

Begin with ੳ. The Punjab Language Department’s entry identifies it as the first alphabet letter and gives the independent forms ਉ, ਊ and ਓ. It explicitly says that the unmarked bearer is not used alone. Compare the base with the three completed forms in the checked examples. Your task is to recognise their relationship, rather than pronounce the bare bearer as if it were an ordinary word. Copy the group once while keeping the forms in their original order.[1]

Recognise IRI as a different bearer

The entry for ੲ identifies the third alphabet letter and connects it with three vowel forms: ਇ, ਈ and ਏ. Compare this group with the URA group before choosing an answer. The two bearers have different shapes and are associated with different completed forms. Keep the extra marks when copying; replacing a completed form with its bare bearer would no longer reproduce the checked example.[2]

Place AIRA between them

Punjabi University’s school dictionary identifies ਅ as the second letter, named AIRA. Locate it between the first and third bearers without changing their order. This gives you three distinct reference shapes for later vowel lessons. In the exercise, identify the completed URA group from the two checked alternatives; you do not need to invent a word or supply an English sound equivalent.[3]

Your learning objective

Identify ੳ, ਅ and ੲ and match the URA and IRI groups to their checked vowel forms.

Prerequisites: Complete Gurmukhi lesson 01 before this lesson. Level 2 · Gurmukhi.
