Keep two more upper signs distinct
The school dictionary explicitly displays hora in its ਹੋੜਾ entry. Use the vowel-sign sense here rather than the entry’s unrelated objects and restrictions. Locate that shape above the first consonant of the peacock example below, keeping the rest of the word intact while copying.[1]
The separate kanaura entry connects that sign with ਔ. Keep its name separate from kanna, the upright sign studied earlier. Similar-sounding English labels should not lead you to replace one checked written form with another.[2]
Kandola’s orthography discussion places hora and kanaura above their letters and associates them with ਓ and ਔ respectively.[5]
Locate hora in peacock
Maya Singh’s 1895 dictionary records ਮੋਰ for the bird peacock. Find ਮ first, then look at the sign above it before following the final ਰ. Copy the complete spelling and mark the upper sign in your notes. Return to the dictionary’s displayed hora shape to check that your copy preserves the relevant feature rather than a vaguely similar curve.[3]
Locate kanaura in rice
The vocabulary dictionary gives ਚੌਲ for rice, the husked grain of paddy. Find ਚ and compare its upper sign with the one in the peacock word. The surrounding consonants also differ, so identify the sign deliberately rather than choosing from word length. Copy both complete examples, cover their meanings, and then match the rice spelling to the selected meaning used in this lesson.[4]
Your learning objective
Locate hora in ਮੋਰ and kanaura in ਚੌਲ and match the rice example with its checked meaning.
Prerequisites: Complete Gurmukhi lesson 14 before this lesson. Level 15 · Gurmukhi.
Check your understanding
