Letter and context

Malik’s Punjabi-script discussion illustrates four contextual forms of beh. The isolated letter is a reference shape; recognise it again within a complete word rather than requiring the surrounding outline to remain identical.[1]

Follow beh through the elderly-man word

The dictionary records بابا with an elderly-man sense, as well as other uses. Select that first sense for this activity. Follow its letters from the right and locate each ب before copying the complete spelling. Notice the repeated sequence and the breaks in its visible connections. Keep the word together in your notes rather than treating each visual break as permission to create a new word. Cover the meaning, identify the repeated letter again, and then restore the meaning as a memory check.[2]

Locate beh at the end of book

The separate entry gives کتاب for book. Follow the full spelling to its left-hand end and find ب there. Compare that position with the repeated occurrences in the elderly-man example, keeping the other letters intact. Copy the two words on separate lines and check where the target occurs before answering. Point to its final letter before choosing. This task asks you to recognise a letter in actual words, rather than assemble an unverified spelling from an English sound or assume that every final letter must share the same connection pattern.[3]
