Several histories of a spelling

Bains is used as a surname in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, associates a Punjabi Sikh use with a Jat clan and also describes a separate Scottish and English use related to Baines. It records an ancestry belief for the Punjabi name, but such a tradition is not documentary proof of a particular family tree. Identical Roman spellings can have different histories. A name alone cannot establish a person’s language, religion, caste or relationship to another bearer. Full names, locations and original records matter when researching an individual.[1]

Teaching Punjabi in British Columbia

A University of British Columbia oral-history project profiles Gurpreet Kaur Bains, a Surrey teacher who began teaching Punjabi in 2006. The profile says she helped establish a Punjabi youth writing prize that enables student work to appear in an anthology. It includes an interview in which she discusses language education and her experience in British Columbia. This is a record of one teacher’s work and recollections, rather than a measure of what every Bains family shares. A dated project profile also should not be assumed to reflect her current job without checking. The project makes the full interview available to visitors.[2]

Migration and research

The University of the Fraser Valley profiles Satwinder Kaur Bains as a scholar whose work includes language, identity and South Asian Canadian migration. Its publication list includes research on Punjabi ideas of home and migration to Canada. Gurpreet Kaur Bains and Satwinder Kaur Bains are distinct people; their shared surname does not establish kinship. The two institutional records provide examples in teaching and research, while the dictionary discusses naming. A researcher can use those different types of sources to locate a person’s work, but must seek family-specific evidence before proposing a shared ancestry.[3]
