More than one origin

Behind the Name has separate entries for Nadia in different language traditions. One lists نادیہ as an Urdu form related to the Arabic Nadiyya; another entry covers the same Roman spelling in European languages. This makes it especially important not to infer a single meaning, language or ancestry from the English spelling alone. A person’s own written form and pronunciation provide better evidence about their name. The examples below show documented uses connected with Lahore, without claiming that every person named Nadia shares an origin or reason for choosing it.[1][2]

An actor and theatre practitioner

Dawn reported a 2025 Lahore Fort event at which actor Nadia Jamil spoke about women’s resilience and her experience of socially engaged theatre. The report says she discussed roles offered by Ajoka Theatre. An earlier Dawn interview described her involvement in arts education and a storytelling session in Lahore. These are records of particular activities at particular dates, not a full biography or a guarantee of current roles. They identify a public practitioner named Nadia and a Lahore connection; they do not establish the meaning intended when she was named.[3][4]

An artist connected with Lahore

An exhibition catalogue identifies Nadia Khawaja as an artist born in Multan who graduated in printmaking from the National College of Arts in Lahore in 2001. It lists exhibitions and later work in a range of media. She is a different person from the actor above. A catalogue entry records how an artist was presented in that exhibition context and may not cover later work. Reading catalogue credits alongside interviews or institutional records helps distinguish people with the same given name. Neither example establishes that their families used the same script or intended the same meaning. The catalogue also lists drawing and painting among Khawaja’s media.[5]
