Name and word
Sahib appears as ਸਾਹਿਬ in Gurmukhi and صاحب in the Arabic-based script. A name reference records its use in Punjabi and Urdu and connects it to the Arabic word ṣāḥib, with senses including companion, friend and master. As with other terms used across languages, meaning depends on context. Sahib can be a personal name, but a reader can also encounter it as an honorific. The occurrence of the word alone does not tell us which role it plays in a particular sentence.[1]
A scholar’s name
Professor Sahib Singh was a Sikh scholar and teacher associated with Gurbani grammar and the commentary Sri Guru Granth Sahib Darpan. A biographical account identifies both his grammatical work and the ten-volume commentary. Here Sahib is part of the scholar’s personal name, while Singh is another element of the name by which he is known. His public work is a useful example of usage, but it does not explain why his family chose the name or establish a rule for every person called Sahib.[2]
A title of respect
Sahib also appears in respectful titles, including the name Guru Granth Sahib. In that setting the word is part of a title for a scripture, not the personal name of the scholar who wrote a commentary on it. The distinction helps researchers index texts and people accurately: an automated search for Sahib may return a person, a title or an ordinary term of address. Read the surrounding words and follow an individual’s preferred spelling. A name or honorific by itself does not establish a person’s religion, community membership or family history.[3]
Reading the spelling
The name reference records Sahib in Punjabi and neighbouring language traditions. That entry is useful evidence of documented usage, rather than a survey of every Punjabi household. In a family document, compare the name with surrounding entries and preserve the spelling in the original record.[1]
