From Dugri to performance

Amar Singh Chamkila, born Dhani Ram, came from Dugri near Ludhiana. A 2023 Indian Express profile describes him working in a cloth mill and learning harmonium and dholak while seeking opportunities in music. It says he wrote songs and sang in the chorus for Surinder Shinda before developing a career as a singer. The report also traces partnerships with Surinder Sonia, Usha Kiran and Amarjot Kaur. These collaborators were part of a changing career in Punjabi popular music. The account combines biographical reporting with the critic’s interpretation of his music and should not be read as a complete discography.[1]

Songs and social themes

In Sacred and Secular Musics, scholar Virinder S. Kalra discusses Chamkila’s songs in relation to social life and moral debate in Punjab. Kalra describes lyrics addressing subjects including alcohol use and relationships, and also notes Chamkila’s religious recordings. The analysis places his work in a period of political violence while questioning easy divisions between sacred and secular music. It is a scholar’s interpretation of selected material, rather than proof that every song had the same subject or reception. Amarjot was an important singing partner, and their performances should be understood as collaborative work involving more than one voice.[2]

An unresolved killing

Chamkila, Amarjot Kaur and two members of their troupe were shot dead near Mehsampur on 8 March 1988 as they travelled to a performance. A 2018 Mint report drew on the recollection of surviving musician Lal Chand and described the killing as unsolved. It noted that different explanations had circulated, without resolving the identity or motives of the assailants. The deaths occurred during a period of violence in Punjab. Distinguishing documented events from speculation matters when remembering the performers and their colleagues, whose work and lives extended beyond the circumstances of their deaths.[3]
