Family and musical training
Singer Daler Mehndi told the Times of India in 2012 that he was born and raised in Bihar in a musical family. He identified his father, Ajmer Singh, as a devotional singer at Takht Shri Patna Sahib and described training in classical music as well as spiritual singing. Mehndi also recalled driving a cab in Berkeley, California, while singing ghazals on weekends. He said attending a Grateful Dead concert there helped inspire his ambitions as a live performer. These details come from a retrospective interview and describe the musician’s own account of his early influences and movement between musical settings.[1]
Early albums and collaborators
A 1997 Billboard report identified Bolo Ta Ra Ra Ra, released in 1995, as Mehndi’s debut album and Dardi Rab Rab as his second, released in 1996. It described his third album, Ho Jayegi Balle Balle, as having been produced and mixed in Delhi by Jawahar Wattal, who had also worked on the first two albums. The trade report attributed most of the new album’s lyrics to Mehndi. It also printed sales figures supplied by the singer; those claims are not treated here as independently audited totals. The account gives a contemporary view of the records and the people involved in their production.[2]
Writing words and tunes
Asked about songwriting by The New Indian Express in 2019, Mehndi said that sometimes a tune came first and sometimes the words did; at other times he developed them together. He described saving ideas while travelling and working on them later at his home studio. The same interview discussed World Cup Hamara Hai, a cricket-related song whose video was shot mostly in Chandigarh and featured rapper Viruss, with lyrics credited to Ullumanati. His remarks describe a flexible creative process and identify collaborators on one project. They do not imply that every recording in his career followed the same method.[3]
