Training and repertoire
Hans Raj Hans was born in Shafipur, Punjab, in 1962, according to the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s citation for its 2004 folk music award. The academy says he studied Punjabi music for several years with Ustad Puran Shah Koti and identifies him with Sufi traditions in Punjabi folk song. It names poets represented in his repertoire, including Baba Farid, Bulle Shah, Shah Hussain and Waris Shah, and notes his work with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The citation recognises his contribution to Punjabi folk music. It provides an institutional summary of his training and repertoire at the time of the award, rather than a full discography.[1]
Learning devotional singing
In a 2011 Telegraph interview in Patna, Hans recalled listening to devotional singing at a dargah in his village near Jalandhar. He described Sufi singing as a demanding practice requiring time and dedication, and expressed concern that it should remain connected to tradition. He also recalled receiving advice from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the report associated his Hindi-film singing with Kachche Dhaage. These comments are the singer’s own account of learning and artistic values. They sit alongside the academy citation’s description of his teacher and repertoire without assuming that every listener understands Sufi music in the same way.[2]
A move into electoral politics
Hans also entered electoral politics. Reporting before the 2024 parliamentary election, The Indian Express said he had contested Jalandhar in 2009 as a Shiromani Akali Dal candidate and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. It reported that he won the North West Delhi parliamentary seat in 2019 and was selected as his party’s candidate for Faridkot in 2024. The article was written before the Faridkot vote, so that candidacy should not be mistaken for a claim about the result. His career in public life developed alongside his identity as a singer associated with Punjabi and Sufi music.[3]
