The range of progressive poetry

Mohan Singh (1905–1978) was a Punjabi poet, teacher and editor. A publisher’s biography associates him with the literary magazine Panj Darya.[4]

The publisher reports that his poetry collection Wadda Vela received the Sahitya Akademi award in 1959. That is the award year, not necessarily the date the book first appeared.[4]

Mohan Singh’s poetry combined social commitment with an extensive emotional range. Critic Tejwant Singh Gill draws attention to diversity in style, metre and diction. His own reading resists reducing the poems to straightforward communication of a political position. Dreams, desire, waiting, beauty, disappointment and aspiration give feeling a complex shape. Gill values the precision of expression and the imagery through which those experiences become poetry. The account places formal choices beside human hopes, rather than making an ideological label sufficient to explain the writing. It is a particular critic’s assessment of the poet’s work, attentive to language as well as subject.[1]

A magazine and a younger writer

Surjit Singh’s recollection gives literary craft a practical setting. In the summer of 1956 he visited Mohan, editor of Panj Darya, in Jalandhar. He remembers an operation in which the poet handled writing, editing, proofreading and dispatch, with printing undertaken elsewhere in town. The visitor had sent poems and received a reply before arranging the meeting. Their conversation became an account of originality, thinking about an ending and the difficult work of correcting a draft. Surjit later grouped the advice under five headings, acknowledging that he had reorganised what was said. His narrative consequently preserves a formative encounter and its continuing effect on him, rather than a verbatim sequence of instructions.[2]

A university association remembered

He also recalls meeting Mohan again in 1973, by then associated with Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana. The second encounter connects the earlier magazine editor with a later university setting.[2]

A Tribune report of October 2026 records PAU commemorating him with a literary programme at Students’ Home. Organised through the Dr Surjit Patar Chair, the gathering included poetry recitation and discussion of his contribution. It documents a specific later occasion for reading the poet within the university’s cultural life.[3]
