Baghapurana: town, tehsil and records of change

A town and its surrounding tehsil

Baghapurana, also written Bagha Purana, is a town in Moga district in Indian Punjab. The district administration lists it as a municipal council as well as a subdivision and tehsil. These names refer to different areas: the town is not interchangeable with the surrounding tehsil or development block. District records also list a civil hospital in Baghapurana and a service centre at Muglu Patti, offering concrete starting points for tracing local institutions. Administrative lists describe the period in which they were made and should be checked for subsequent changes.[1][2][5]

Reading the census

The 2011 district census handbook records 225,649 people in Bagha Purana tehsil, including 200,443 rural and 25,206 urban residents. It gives the tehsil’s urban share as 11.2 per cent in 2011, compared with 10.5 per cent in 2001. These figures concern the tehsil as defined for that census, not a current estimate or a total for every neighbouring settlement.[3]

Moga district itself was formed on 24 November 1995, according to the district administration, after Moga had been a subdivision of Faridkot district. Its account also dates the addition of the Dharamkot block to a 1999 notification. This wider history matters when tracing Baghapurana through older records: a search limited to the present district name may miss material catalogued under an earlier administration. District formation is a change in governance, not necessarily a founding date for the individual town.[6]

Water, services and local history

A monitoring committee’s 2021 observations described a sewage treatment plant in Baghapurana that was installed but still undergoing trials; it reported untreated sewage entering the Kaleke drain and recommended connections and commissioning. The committee asked the municipal council to extend sewer connections and recommended that the water-supply department commission the plant. Its recommendations are a record of proposed action, not proof that each task was completed.[4]
