An entrance to the Walled City

Bhati Gate, also spelled Bhatti Gate, is associated with one of the historic entrances to Lahore’s Walled City. Pakistan’s Department of Archaeology and Museums links the name to the Bhatti community and describes the gate in the context of Mughal Lahore. The Walled City’s gates and walls have been altered, demolished or rebuilt over time, so the history of an entrance is not necessarily the age of every surviving part of its structure. Historic maps, photographs and descriptions can help distinguish an old route or name from a later building. Spellings vary between sources and across languages.[1]

A neighbourhood as well as a gate

The Punjab Walled City Authority describes Bhatti Gate as a neighbourhood with bazaars and historic buildings, including the area around Hakiman Bazaar. Such accounts show why a gate is more than a point on a map: streets, homes, trade and social life give the surrounding area its character. A promotional or institutional description reflects the choices of its author and does not capture every resident’s experience. A local history can combine maps and building records with interviews, remembering that memories may concern different periods and that an old house can have several histories.[2]

Faqir Khana Museum

Pakistan’s Department of Archaeology and Museums locates the Faqir Khana Museum near Bhatti Gate and connects its history to the Fakir family’s settlement in Lahore. The museum’s own presentation describes an ancestral home containing art and family heritage. Such a collection can illuminate the city’s material culture and relationships, but its objects and labels should be considered individually, with their provenance and dates. The neighbourhood is also a living place, not only a setting for museum collections. Visitors should check present access arrangements and respect the homes and businesses around the historic streets.[3]
