A town in Ludhiana district

Jagraon is a town in Ludhiana district, Punjab, India. A 1971 census town directory lists Jagraon as a municipality and records its population at successive censuses. Such tables allow researchers to trace growth, but they need to be read with the boundaries and definitions used for each count. The town is also connected to a wider tehsil and surrounding villages, which should not be confused with the municipal area. The directory classifies its economy using broad categories including trade, industry and services; individual occupations and household experiences require more detailed evidence than an aggregate classification.[1]

Lala Lajpat Rai and Jagraon

The Indian Parliament’s biographical account of Lala Lajpat Rai records that he began legal practice in the revenue court at Jagraon. The court connection is one part of his early career before his wider political work. Reading a biography alongside local court records and contemporary writing can reveal both the limits of that summary and the town’s connections with broader political history.[2]

Rai’s association with Jagraon should not be confused with his birthplace: the 2011 Moga district census handbook identifies Dhudike as his birthplace in that district.[5]

Planning and heritage

A published Jagraon master plan lists Lala Lajpat Rai’s ancestral house among protected heritage places. The designation of a house as a heritage site is distinct from a claim that its occupant was born there. The plan is also a record of planning and protection at the time it was prepared; it does not establish the building’s present condition or public access. Heritage sites sit within a working town, so preservation involves decisions about surrounding streets, land use and the needs of residents. Current records and local authorities can provide information on later work and access.[3]

The 2011 census counted 65,240 people in Jagraon municipal town.[4]
