A town and its chiefs
Raikot is a town in Ludhiana district, Punjab, India. The 1961 district census handbook describes it as a municipality then within Jagraon tehsil and recounts an older association with Rai Ahmed and Rai Kahla. It also records the town’s road connection with Ludhiana. The handbook’s account of earlier chiefs is an administrative historical summary and should be compared with other documentary and local sources. Its description of municipal status, population and transport is tied to the census period. A town can retain its name while the administrative units around it change, making dates essential when interpreting older records.[1]
Rai Kalha and Guru Gobind Singh
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s account of Guru Gobind Singh’s life refers to Rai Kalha of Raikot as someone who befriended the Guru during his journey through Malwa. This association is remembered in Sikh historical and religious traditions. Narratives of the Guru’s movements and their dates can differ between sources, so a brief institutional biography should be read alongside other scholarship rather than treated as a complete chronology. The story connects Raikot with a history that reaches beyond the town while preserving the particular roles attributed to local individuals in that history.[2]
Raikot today and in older records
The Ludhiana district administration lists Raikot as both a tehsil and a development block. Neither is necessarily identical to the municipal town: each term describes a different administrative unit and may include surrounding villages. This matters when comparing modern data with the 1961 handbook, which placed the town within Jagraon tehsil. Boundary and administrative changes do not erase the ties between the two places, but they do affect what a statistic represents. Official lists offer a starting point for identifying units, while maps, census definitions and local records help establish their extent at a particular time.[3]
The 2011 census counted 28,734 people in Raikot municipal town.[4]
