Kangra and changing boundaries
Kangra is a district and historic region in present-day Himachal Pradesh, India. The district administration says Kangra formed part of the larger Punjab administration until its transfer to Himachal Pradesh on 1 November 1966. It dates the creation of the present district to a further reorganisation in 1972. The older district covered a different area, including places that later became separate districts. A historical mention of Kangra in Punjab therefore describes an earlier administrative setting, not its present state. Maps and census tables need to be read with these boundary changes in mind.[1]
Kangra Fort
Kangra Fort is one of the region’s best-known historic structures. The district administration describes a long history of changing rule and says a British garrison occupied it until the 1905 earthquake caused major damage. The fort’s walls and buildings reflect different phases of use and repair, and not every feature can be attributed to the same ruler or period. The site is described as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. Architectural remains and excavation records provide evidence alongside local histories, while present access should be checked with the responsible authorities.[2]
The earthquake of 1905
The National Army Museum catalogues a photograph of Kangra Fort after the earthquake of 4 April 1905. Its account describes widespread destruction and reports a contemporary parliamentary statement about troops sent to assist affected places. Estimates of deaths and damage in historical disasters vary by source and method. A photograph can show the condition of a particular view after the event, but it cannot alone represent the experiences of everyone affected or explain all later repairs. The earthquake is part of the region’s social and environmental history as well as the history of a single monument.[3]
