Nangal and the project

Nangal is a town in Rupnagar district, Punjab, India, closely associated with the Bhakra-Nangal river valley project. The Bhakra Beas Management Board describes the difficult early construction conditions and says road and railway extensions towards Nangal began in the 1940s. It records the establishment of a hospital there in 1951 as project infrastructure developed. The project depended on the labour and skills of many workers as well as engineers and planners. An institutional history gives one perspective on that development; workers’ accounts and records of affected communities are also needed to understand its social consequences.[1]

Nangal Dam and the channel

Nangal Dam and the Nangal Hydel Channel are components of the wider Bhakra-Nangal project. The management board says they were completed in 1954, before completion of the main Bhakra Dam in 1963. The channel carries water from Nangal towards powerhouses at Ganguwal and Kotla. Nangal Dam and Bhakra Dam are separate structures and should not be treated as interchangeable names for one dam. The system’s history connects irrigation, electricity generation and water management across a much wider region. Technical descriptions explain infrastructure, while the experiences of people whose homes or livelihoods changed require separate evidence.[2]

Nangal Wildlife Sanctuary

Near the town, Nangal Wildlife Sanctuary occupies a human-made reservoir associated with the project. The Ramsar Sites Information Service records its designation as a wetland of international importance on 26 September 2019 and describes habitats for wildlife in the Shiwalik foothills. Its ecological value shows that a constructed water body can support important species, while also raising questions about how water is managed and habitat is protected. The sanctuary is a defined site, not a designation covering all of Nangal or the whole Bhakra-Nangal system. Species records and water conditions change over time, so present conditions should be checked against current monitoring.[3]
