Understand what addak signals
Cheema’s entry explains addak as a sign used for consonant doubling, also called gemination. The mark indicates more than a general instruction to sound emphatic. In a checked spelling, preserve it in its actual position and relate it to the following consonant. The entry also notes words with variable addak spellings, so this lesson does not claim that adding the sign always creates a new meaning.[1]
Read address without adding a mark
Maya Singh’s 1895 dictionary records ਪਤਾ as an address or a place to which someone is directed. Use address here. Look at ਪ, then ਤ and the final vowel sign: there is no addak in this displayed headword. Copy the exact sequence before comparing it with the leaf example. Do not add a mark simply because you remember another word with the same surrounding consonants. Meaning and checked spelling work together in this activity.[2]
Preserve addak in the leaf word
The separate vocabulary entry supplies ਪੱਤਾ for a plant leaf. Compare its upper addak with the address spelling while keeping the surrounding letters in view. Copy both words beside their selected meanings, then cover the meanings and locate the difference again. The exercise asks for the leaf spelling, so a copy that drops the addak would lose the feature distinguishing these checked examples.[3]
