Understand a lower letter form

A Reference Grammar of Punjabi describes subjoined consonants below another consonant and distinguishes haha, rara and vava types. This lesson practises the lower RA form in two checked dictionary words.[1]

Keep the cluster in the love word

The inspected Mahan Kosh entry records ਪ੍ਰੇਮ with a love or affection sense. Look closely at its beginning: preserve the smaller lower form with ਪ, rather than replacing the beginning with an unrelated full-sized letter sequence. Follow the upper vowel sign and final ਮ as well. Copy the complete headword, then compare the beginning of your copy with the actual example. Recognition here means noticing both the main letter and the feature below it, even when your attention is drawn toward the upper vowel sign.[2]

Read the checked question word

The school dictionary gives ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ with the meaning question. Compare its beginning with the beginning of the love word, then follow the different remaining letters. Copy the whole checked spelling and locate its lower form again. For the exercise, use the selected lexical meaning to choose the correct word, followed by a visual check that you have preserved its beginning. The two examples share a cluster feature but have different meanings and endings; spotting a lower form alone is not enough to decide which complete word has been written.[3]

Your learning objective

Locate the lower ਰ form in ਪ੍ਰੇਮ and ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ and read the selected question word.
