Birmingham influences
In a 2013 Radio and Music interview, Steven Kapur, known as Apache Indian, described the different influences he encountered growing up in Birmingham. He spoke of Punjabi family connections and Hindi film culture at home, reggae and Jamaican cultural life in the neighbourhood, and British popular music at school. He also explained that his stage name drew on a Jamaican performer he had listened to. These are the musician’s own descriptions of identity and influence in an interview. They show how he explained his work at that moment, rather than reducing all British Asian music to a single shared experience.[1]
An early recording and an academy
An Asian Youth Culture oral-history page presents Apache Indian’s recollection of making Movie Over India. In the transcript he describes bringing a reggae rhythm and tabla together with language he used at home and with friends. He remembers arranging a small pressing and taking the record to shops. The same page dates the establishment of his music academy at the Handsworth campus of South and City College to 2013. These are a retrospective personal account and an organisational note; the record itself and an audio version of the interview were not reviewed for this page. The academy statement is not used to infer current enrolment. In his account, he had initially wanted only ten copies, but the pressing process required a much larger quantity. He described distributing the records to reggae shops.[2]
UK chart entries
Official Charts records Arranged Marriage and Chok There on the UK singles chart in 1993, and No Reservations on the albums chart in the same year. The database provides dated chart positions for those releases. It does not measure every audience reached by the music, or establish details of a performance or recording session.[3]
