A record and its contributors

A 2022 Guardian feature identifies Coventry producer Rajinder Rai as Panjabi MC and discusses his 1998 album Legalised. It describes Mundian To Bach Ke as combining a sample from the television theme Knight Rider with a tumbi part played by KS Bhamrah and vocals by Labh Janjua. The account places those collaborators alongside the producer instead of treating the recording as a solo performance. It also reports Rai’s memories of travelling to Punjab to record with musicians. The feature is a written account of production and reception; the song and interviews in audio or video were not heard for this entry.[1]

The Raj and collaboration

In a 2010 NDTV interview, Rai described The Raj as an album in which he brought bhangra together with hip-hop, house and other sounds. He explained that the title drew on a shortened form of his own name. Asked about particular tracks, he praised Jaily Manjitpuri’s vocal on Snake Charmer II and recalled recording Mirza with Sukshinder Shinda during an early visit to Punjab. These answers give a specific account of collaborators and working methods from the musician himself. They do not establish that all elements of the album can be described by one genre, or substitute for hearing the recordings. He also described the British musical environment as one in which Punjabi music, hip-hop and new electronic styles were all accessible.[2]

A UK chart run

Official Charts lists Mundian To Bach Ke with an Official Singles Chart peak of number five and a chart run beginning on 25 January 2003. It identifies the label as Instant Karma. This is a record of a particular UK chart appearance, several years after the 1998 album discussed in the Guardian feature; it is not the date of the song’s first creation.[3][1]
