A painter from Gurdaspur

Sobha Singh was a painter born in 1901 at Sri Hargobindpur in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. The Sobha Singh Art Gallery and Museum’s biography describes his work as a draughtsman in the British Indian Army and says that he subsequently opened studios in Amritsar, Lahore and Delhi. It records his departure from Lahore during Partition in 1947 and later residence at Andretta in the Kangra valley. The gallery’s family-associated account offers a detailed chronology, though a full history of his career would compare it with exhibition records, contemporary criticism and the paintings themselves.[1]

Portraits and Punjabi stories

Sobha Singh painted portraits of Sikh Gurus and figures from Punjabi stories. The art organisation DAG describes his work on religious portraits alongside portrayals of historical figures and characters such as Heer and Ranjha. DAG also describes portraits of freedom fighters and Indian army figures. A painting of a historical or religious figure is an artist’s interpretation rather than a photograph of the sitter. Different versions, copies and reproductions may circulate, making a work’s title, date, medium and ownership useful details when researching it.[2]

Andretta and the gallery

A 2022 report on Andretta describes the village’s associations with Sobha Singh, theatre practitioner Norah Richards and pottery. The report also describes the gallery and museum maintained by Singh’s family.[3]

Singh’s family-associated gallery biography says he lived at Andretta after leaving Lahore and died in 1986. It describes original works and personal belongings displayed at the gallery and museum.[1]

A place of display can introduce visitors to an artist’s practice as well as the people who maintain a collection. Gallery information reflects a particular institution’s account and may change over time; visitors should check access directly. Comparing original works and later reproductions helps explain how familiar images travelled beyond their original setting. Andretta’s arts history includes other artists and practitioners as well as Sobha Singh.[3]
