Learning music in Ludhiana

A 2023 Indian Express obituary identifies the Punjabi singer Surinder Shinda as Surinder Pal Dhammi and connects his early life with Ayali village and Ludhiana. It reports cultural activist Gurbhajan Gill’s recollection that Shinda learned music from his father, Bachan Ram. The report also describes schooling in Ludhiana, later mechanical-engineering study and a brief period of work before full-time singing. These details combine the newspaper’s account with memories attributed to people it interviewed. Reports differ on his age, so this entry does not select a precise birth year. The obituary records his death in Ludhiana in July 2023.[1]

Songs and film work

The Tribune’s 2023 remembrance names Putt Jattan De, Jatt Jeona Morh and Truck Balliya among songs associated with Shinda. It describes him as a singer and actor and lists Punjabi films including Putt Jattan De, Ucha Dar Babe Nanak Da and Badla Jatti Da. The report also associates his work with the kali singing style and with fellow singer Kuldeep Manak. These are documented credits in a newspaper remembrance; a title can appear in more than one medium and the report should not be treated as a full discography or filmography. The recordings and films were not reviewed for this entry.[2]

Collaboration and a music scene

A 2024 Indian Express feature about Amar Singh Chamkila describes Dhani Ram, later known as Chamkila, working with Shinda before establishing his own recording career. The feature reports that he helped with stage work and wrote lyrics for Shinda, and describes Shinda’s duet partner Surinder Sonia in the same period. This account places Shinda within a network of singers, writers and performers rather than treating a song as the work of one person alone. It is a later reconstruction of early collaborations, not a reviewed recording session or a complete chronology of the musicians’ relationship.[3]
