An imperial mosque in Lahore
The Badshahi Mosque stands in Lahore, Pakistan, facing the Lahore Fort across Hazuri Bagh. Punjab’s Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department attributes its commissioning to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and describes construction under Fidai Khan Koka in the early 1670s. The mosque is a place of worship as well as a historic monument. Its setting connects it with a wider group of Lahore landmarks, but the mosque and the fort are separate structures with their own histories. A building used over centuries may be repaired and changed; present materials and arrangements do not necessarily preserve every original detail.[1]
Courtyard, minarets and domes
The heritage publication Naqoosh-e-Javidan describes the mosque’s raised courtyard, entrance, minarets and three marble domes. It discusses red sandstone and white marble inlay, and gives the gateway inscription’s date as 1084 AH, or 1673–74 CE. The entrance leads towards a courtyard, with the prayer chamber along its western side. Architectural description helps distinguish these spaces rather than treating the complex as a single room. The publication compares features of the mosque with other Mughal buildings, inviting readers to examine both shared designs and the specific materials and details used in Lahore. Its description is a basis for exploring the building’s craftsmanship.[2]
Conservation and use
A 2025 Dawn report describes conservation work entrusted to the Walled City of Lahore Authority through the Auqaf Department. It reports work on parts of the entrance and chambers and describes an advisory group that included conservation and engineering expertise. The report recorded progress at a particular date; it does not establish the present status of every repair. Conserving a working mosque involves care for historic fabric as well as the needs of worshippers and visitors. Photographs, conservation reports and accounts from people using the building can each contribute different evidence about its changing condition.[3]
